It's time to toss out your plastic straws, and get stainless steel straws instead

Plastic straws have a lot going for them. They’re convenient, they’re cheap, and they’re easy available. But whilst these are great to have on standby at home, we recommend using stainless steel straws for drinking the smoothies or milkshakes that you make on a regular basis. In this article, we tell you all you need to know about stainless steel straws, and the benefits of using these over plastic straws.
What’s wrong with using plastic straws?
First things first - plastic straws are known to contain Bisphenol A (BPA), a harmful chemical which mimics the activity of the estrogen hormone. BPA has been shown to result in several reproductive disorders and heart conditions, and just as you’d buy a BPA-free bottle for drinking water, you should also ensure that your straws don’t contain any BPA.

Secondly, plastic straws pose a huge problem for the environment. Nearly 500 million disposable plastic straws end up in landfills every year in the US alone, and while we don’t have updated figures for the amount of plastic straws that Singaporeans use, what we do know is that these contribute to a category of waste which is easily preventable.
Are there other alternatives to stainless steel straws?
Other sustainable, non-disposable drinking straws include glass straws and even plastic straws, but stainless steel straws are without a doubt the most durable of the bunch. If you’re looking for straws that will stand the test of time, and won’t break or shatter with prolonged use, stainless steel is the way to go!

What should you look out for when buying stainless steel straws?
Stainless steel straws typically come in two categories: bent and straight. Both are widely used; which one you should get really boils down to personal preference. What you do need to take note of, though, is that your stainless steel straws should be made with food-grade stainless steel (such as the ones we’ve featured below!). These are non-toxic, and do not rust with use.
How do you clean stainless steel straws?
Most stainless steel straw sets come with a cleaning brush, which is made of nylon bristles. You may use these to scrub off any residue which is left inside the straw. Washing your cleaning brush is simple - just use detergent, and rinse thoroughly. If you don’t have a cleaning brush, be sure to rinse your straw immediately after usage.
