Picture this. You’re mind-numbingly tired after a long day of catering to your newborn baby’s every whim and fancy. It’s late at night, and you’ve finally gotten your fussy little princess (or prince!) to settle down and fall asleep. There’s a stack of dirty dishes in the sink and a load of laundry to be done, but you’re too exhausted to deal with any of that. You almost trip over yourself in your haste to make it to your room, but as you sink down into your bed, your baby wakes up and starts screaming his or her head off - yet again.
It’s no secret that the first few weeks (or months) of parenting can be downright nightmarish, especially when you’re dealing with a fussy baby who cries constantly. If you look online, there are tons of tips for parents who are dealing with this - suggestions include giving your baby a bath, singing lullabies, dimming the lights, and more. But what if you’ve tried all these techniques, but your baby is still wide awake - and as noisy - as ever?

The Baby Shusher and the rationale behind it
Enter… the Baby Shusher! This baby sleep device uses a recorded human voice to interrupt your baby’s crying, and engage their relaxation and calming reflex. The idea behind the product is derived from Dr Harvey Karp’s bestselling book, Happiest Baby on the Block, which outlines how rhythmic shushing helps with baby sleep training.
How does rhythmic shushing work? The act of shushing is highly comforting and calming to babies, as it produces a sound that mimics the sound of blood flow, as well as other in-utero sounds. With rhythmic shushing, your baby will feel as though he or she is cocooned in a safe and secure environment, and naturally fall asleep.
How do you use the baby shusher?
The Baby Shusher can play for up to 30 minutes at a time - simply turn on the device and adjust the volume to ensure that it’s louder than your baby’s crying. Because the Baby Shusher is portable, it’s easy to bring along when you’re heading out with your baby. The device runs on batteries, so you don’t need to fuss around with any cords or wires.

What should I take note of when using the Baby Shusher?
Make sure that you place the Baby Shusher within two feet of your baby's hearing radius - if it’s too far away, it won’t be effective! Also take note of the direction of the shushing sound - because you want the sound waves to be travelling towards your baby’s ears, the speaker that is located on the bottom of the device should be pointed towards your baby. Last but not least, don’t be afraid to turn up the volume on the Baby Shusher. When they’re in the womb, babies are consistently experiencing noises of up to 95 decibels (the equivalent of a loud vacuum cleaner), so you won’t be startling or hurting your baby even when the Baby Shusher is switched on at its maximum volume.
